And the ref. That has to go down as the worst decision football has ever seen. There were no two ways about it, whatever decision the ref gave or the linesman flagged for, it would have resulted in being awarded to Scotland.
But then, we should have defended better. The game lasts 90 minutes, perhaps we thought that we had done enough for the draw.

oooh the youtube video didn't appear the first time, having watched it, the only thing I can think is that the ref saw it as a fair shoulder barge from the italian and then the scot sticking out his leg to bring down the italian, but yeah, it does seem very harsh.

From the view the ref had, he would have seen Hutton controlling the ball, Italian coming in, Scot going down. If it was a free kick to Italy, it was a dive by Hutton. Which equals a booking.

Given the linesman had a clearer view, he would have seen the force with with the Italian barged into Hutton when he was in clear control, and flagged for the Scots.
The ONLY thing I can think of, is that the linesman flagged, and the ref, given he gave most decisions the Italian way, carried on in that vein and awarded Italy the free-kick. In which case the linesman should speak up and tell the ref that the free kick was for US, not them.
It's a glorious failure situation, again, like every competition we are in, but this time we really did deserve to go through. We were 1 minute away from a draw against the world champions after already beating the world cup finalists twice, and the quarter finalists once.
For a country that is considered by some arrogant managers/players/journalists as being third-rate, that's not bad going.
And I tell you what, it leaves a horrible taste in the mouth knowing that a team that has played well below par like England, qualifies from drawing a lot of games, losing easy ones, and relying on other results to swing their way, when we played the way we have done, got major results, and still don't get through.
